As artificial general intelligence (AGI) advances, so does the urgent need for transparent, democratic oversight. Who should control AGI, and how can we ensure it aligns with human interests? Traditional regulatory bodies and corporate governance structures may struggle to keep up with AGI’s rapid evolution. Enter Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAOs)—blockchain-powered governance systems that could provide a novel approach to AGI oversight.

Why DAOs?

DAOs operate on smart contracts, enabling decentralized decision-making where stakeholders vote on key issues transparently. This structure could offer several advantages in AGI governance:

• Decentralization: Prevents single entities (corporations, governments) from monopolizing AGI.

• Transparency: All governance decisions are recorded on-chain, reducing the risk of hidden agendas.

• Democratic Control: Stakeholders—including researchers, ethicists, and the public—can vote on safety protocols, deployment policies, and ethical guidelines.

How DAOs Could Shape AGI Governance

1. Setting Ethical Guidelines: DAOs could establish AGI training parameters, ensuring alignment with human values and global ethical standards.

2. Oversight & Audits: Community-driven audits could continuously assess AGI’s actions, preventing misuse or unintended consequences.

3. Regulating Deployment: DAOs could vote on when and how AGI systems are deployed, balancing innovation with risk mitigation.

Challenges & Risks

Despite their promise, DAOs have limitations. Voter apathy, governance attacks, and slow decision-making could hinder their effectiveness. Additionally, aligning diverse global perspectives on AGI ethics remains a formidable challenge.

The Path Forward

While DAOs alone may not be the ultimate solution, integrating them into AGI governance structures could enhance transparency and public trust. As superintelligence inches closer, decentralized oversight may be our best bet in keeping it aligned with human interests.
